HydroES 2025

The HydroES 2025 symposium is part of a series of conferences organized by the Société Hydrotechnique de France (SHF) over the past fifteen years, with the support of numerous French and European partners and sponsors. The theme of the 8th session is “ Hydropower, innovation & resilience ”.

Despite the strong growth of wind power and photovoltaics, hydropower remains the leading renewable energy in terms of production. It produces almost two-thirds of the world's low-carbon electricity. In this way, hydroelectric installations help to reduce the impact of climate change, particularly extreme events such as floods and droughts, which are tending to be exacerbated. Hydropower is a local, non-dispatchable form of energy, rooted in the local environment, and its installations play a vital role in managing water resources for a wide range of uses, such as drinking water supply, irrigation, navigation and tourism, and in managing the electricity system through their flexibility. It can compensate for the intermittent nature of other renewable energies and stabilize the grid in the event of the accidental unavailability of another means of generation.

Hydroelectricity must therefore respond to multiple technical, societal and environmental issues and challenges. We need to innovate to find the best balance, to reconcile different uses, to preserve aquatic environments and biodiversity, to adapt to climate change, and to place science, societal services and living beings at the heart of the debate.
